Spring 2010

Some really exciting activites have been taking place this week in the Infant Department! Writing ice words; dancing like a melting icicle ; investigating the dark room and finding out what happens when you freeze all manner of things (ice packs, climbers packs and even milk!). Some of these changed their appearance entirely when they melted again. Real hands-on learning with lots of pictures in the February galleries too!

This term's topic is on the Weather. We have already been looking at the snow! There are photographs in the January gallery showing some of the resources which we have been studying; these include a musical robin who came straight from a winter topic box with some berries to keep him well-fed and some penguins who arrived directly from Antartica!

Autumn 2009

After the fun and noise of the Jambori, the Reception decided to show the Nursery some of their 'moves'.

Nursery class have settled in well and been busy learning lots of new skills with Ms Martin. Getting to grips with the school routine is the first main objective and learning personal and interpersonal social skills is of para-mount importance. There are plenty of opportunities to learn how to take turns, play together and share - with just 8 in the group they have the best setting possible for group interaction. Having Mrs Helliwell directing their learning and monitoring progress, as well as Ms Martin and Mrs Hewitt working alongside each other, everyone gets a chance to be heard and a lap to sit on when needed.

As part of our topic on the Great Fire of London the younger pupils looked at a really great web-site on the White Board together. We worked as a group to brainstorm fire words - great fun!

Mrs Helliwell was really thrilled with the eye-witness accounts the older pupils wrote about life during the Great Fire of London: -

"I saw the flames leaping from the Baker's shop. The wind was helping the flames to spread the fire. House to house, miliyns of people died. I ran to the stable and saved my horse. I ran away to the River Thames." by Erin

"My name is Lewis Williams. Sunday 2nd September I woke up my house was on fire! I saw fire leaping out of a baker's shop. Oh no! I said. I ran out. I went on  a boat on the River Thames. Oh No! I said. The next day it got worse. I ran into a church for safety. I am safe!" By Sam

"My name is Tom McCoy. On Sunday September 2nd 1666 I woke up. I looked out of my window I saw a fire I ran downsters. I grabbed my child. I ran out. Help! I said. Then I saw another person he was very close to the fire. I said No!

What? he said and ignored me and suddenly he fell into the fire. I decided to make a plan. The plan was to collect some water and throw it over the fire. It worked but lots of houses were burnt." By Robert C

"Da iawn Pawb!" says Mrs Hellliwell.

Year 2 have been thinking about Autumn prior to our own Harvest Festival next Wednesday. They wrote some fantastic and colourful acrostic poems which can be seen on the gallery (this is easily found from the Home page). In the meantime here is a particularly colourful one to whet your appetite.
