We have had a very busy term. Year 6 have been busy preparing their leavers service and have been doing transition work for their secondary schools. We have been to Nant BH which we thoroughly enjoyed. We took part in lots of outdoor activities. These included gorge walking and canoeing. We even managed to fit in a midnight feast! We have also been to the Eisteddfod in Llangollen and had our sports day. Year 6 have completed their cycling proficiency and Year 5 are very much looking forward to doing it next year. The children who have guitar lessons showed us their fabulous skills and performed in a mini concert to the whole school and parents. After lots of work and lots of fun we are very much looking forward to the summer holidays!

Cae Ddol field visit:
Our Geography topic has been rivers so we have been studying the River Clwyd. So we could get a better idea of what the River Clwyd is like we went on a field visit to Cae Ddol Park in Ruthin. It was a lovely, sunny day and we really enjoyed ourselves. We carried out different field work activities. We meaured the depth, width, water velocity and bedload of the river in two different places. One site was closer to the source and the other site was further away from the source. Back in class we will be comparing both sets of data to see if our hypotheses were correct. We also go the chance to see evidence of the different processes that take place in a river. We could clearly see where erosion has taken place from the river banks. We then saw where the sediment had been transported and deposited to and the formation of a meander. This was very interesting to see. Here are some of our pictures showing our visit and us working hard collecting data.
Lego workshop:
A lego workshop came to visit us in school. Our task was to build mini houses out of lego ready for making a model of our school. We were all given a section of the outside of school and had to draw it and measure it using metre sticks. We then made our own model of school out of lego! We all enjoyed this experience but never realised there was so much more to lego other than playing with it! Ellis said that he did not think lego could be this complicated! Matthew said it was fun, especially the part when they used the lego. He never knew you could build so many different style roofs out of lego. Here are some pictures of us working hard with the lego.
April 2010
As part of our preparation for secondary school, we will be studying a book called 'Hitler's Daughter'. Without yet having seen the text, we have brainstormed what we know about Hitler and thought around the title 'Hitler's Daughter'. We have each interpreted this title and are planning a story of our own. We will then compare it with our text as we begin to read it. We will also be working on explanations and persuasion.
Ysgol Brynhyfryd invited us and all of the other Year 5 and 6 year groups in the area to attend a Science Chemistry show. We were shown lots of different experiments using different chemicals. We were even shown how to get huge bubbles. We volunteered Miss Fellows to go up on stage and have her hand set on fire! Obviously we will not try any of these experiments at home! We were all very impressed and cannot wait to go to secondary school and have a go at some of these ourselves.
March 2010
This month we were visited by PC Chris. He talked to us about anti social behaviour and the bad effects it can have on our community. We were put into groups. Our task was to design a park for children to play in. Our park was allowed to have anything we wanted. Even mountain side slides and swimming pools. PC Chris then took our designs off us and swapped them with another tables. Our next task was to vandalise the new design we had been given. It was very upsetting seeing our designs ruined by graffiti and other vandalism. It made us realise that this is how people feel when something they like has been vandalised and how we should never vandalise.
Below are some pictures of us carrying out our tasks.
Here are pictures of some of our designs.
As well as studying A Christmas Carol and A Pilgrim's Progress we have also been studying arguments. We have looked at for, against, counter arguments, facts, opinions as well as connectives. We had mini group debates on topics such as whether children should be allowed to go on facebook and other social networking sites and whether we should have to wear school uniform. We then carried out our own class debate on whether we should be allowed to watch television late at night. The class split into for and against watching television late at night. Here are pictures of us preparing for our debate.

Spring 2010
This term pupils will finish the work they started last term on A Christmas Carol and then we will move onto a more contemporary work The Green Hawk by Aeres Twigg a Welsh writer.
The first half term's science work will be on light ... very suitable as the snow on the mountins is certainly making the nights much brighter at present!
Autumn 2009
Studies in English lessons centred on A Pilgrim's Progress.
"It has got good lessons in a fun way. We learnt from all the different names like Owen Ends and Mr Bendy who changed his mind all the time. I really enjoyed and it was nothing like anything I have read before." said Harry Edwards
"It was good and the names of the characters were quite unusual because you wouldn't really have a name like Ob Stinate or Alex Smart but they had these names because it suited their character. The ending was what I expected." said Christian Kirkham.
"It was exciting and it was a journey through lilfe. He was young when he started and he went through different thingg and met different people to do with the things you have to go through in life."said Matthew Reay
Personification in Poetry:
The Forest
The trees in the forest were whispering on a dull day,
With all theri secrets tucked up inside them;
But telling them to the breeze one by one.
By Max Smith
The Classroom
On my lcassroom the rubbers jump,
The rulers sing
The sharpeners say 'Hurry!'
The pens leap
The pencils shriek.
That is my clasroom.
By Hollie Mayman
And a final bit of fun from Charlotte
Down at our school, one thing is very funny
We do all the work, but the teachers get all the money!
Science:
Studying wasp lavae as part of Year 5 and 6 science lesson, brought a better understanding of our local residents. The school is surrounded by mature hedging and so is home to several colonies of wasps. The children learnt about the different types of wasps and how they are suited to their habitats. They now have an even healthier respect for these insects!
Working hard from the very first day; and they even had homework too! Poor things!
English:
This term we will be studying A Pilgrim's Progress as re-written by Geraldine McCaughrean. The original as written by John Bunyan over 400 years ago! We will be using it as a starting point to look at how novels are adapted into films. We can also see how biographical writing is different from other types of writing because this novel is written as a sort of travel-log: it should be good!
